Japanese Dogwood's Red Berries

The red berries on our Japanese Dogwood or Kousa Tree are really a pretty sight. The tree is loaded with them and it looks as if it is decorated for Christmas. Some have fallen off the tree so the ground below is splattered with red berries. They almost look like Raspberries but when you pick one up, you realize that they are hard on the outside. I read that these berries were edible. I picked some and put them in a bowl and have been thinking of trying to taste one but haven't gotten up the nerve. One forum post that I read said that it is best to skin the outer tough layer and eat the inside which as a very sweet taste. No one on this forum thought that the taste was very good so I am not real motivated to try one.
